Head Tide Dam Modification Concept Plans

Client: Atlantic Salmon Federation & Inter-Fluve Inc.

Town of Alna, ME | 2015

In the fall of 2015, LVBrown Studio became involved in a multi-year effort led by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) to modify two dams along the Sheepscot River in Maine. The goal was to restore the natural migration of anadromous fish species—alewife, Atlantic salmon, herring, and American eel— along the Sheepscot River while celebrating the cultural and historical importance of the dams.

Conceptual design renderings presented in town hall meetings helped gain community support for the project. In March 2017, the Town of Alna voted overwhelmingly to modify the dam structure.  In Phase II, Lauren consulted project engineers for site design features, access/circulation, and the overlook platform architectural appearance.

The constructed project includes partial dam removal and an ADA accessible overlook with seating and interpretive signage.  Relic materials from the old mill dam foundation were repurposed to create a new retaining wall to shore up an eroding slope. Parking and vehicular circulation to the site were improved, and a stone pathway was designed to enhance public safety and access below the dam for swimmers, anglers, and paddlers.
